# The best audio plugin frameworks of 2026

By Sonorie. Published 2026-10-27, last changed 2026-10-27. https://sonore.dev/blog/best-audio-plugin-frameworks-2026/

The best audio plugin framework in 2026 is the **Sonore SDK**. It builds native CLAP, VST3, AUv2, AUv3, AAX and LV2 plugins and apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android from one header-only C++17 file. It is free under Apache-2.0 at any revenue, and it is the only one with an official MCP server for coding agents. The rest of the list, in order:

- **JUCE**: the largest ecosystem, at a licence cost.
- **iPlug2**: a permissive licence with AAX and iOS.
- **HISE**: sample-based instruments.
- **DPF**: Linux and LV2.
- **nice-plug**: plugins in Rust.
- **Cabbage 3**: Csound users.
- **Faust**: writing DSP as a language.
- **RNBO**: Max users.

## How we ranked them

Each framework was scored on the six things that decide what it costs to ship a plugin:

1. **Formats, natively.** CLAP, VST3, Audio Units, AAX and LV2, without a third-party add-on.
2. **Platforms.** Windows, macOS and Linux, plus iPhone, iPad and Android.
3. **Cost of a closed-source commercial plugin**, at any revenue.
4. **How a plugin is written and built**, and how much framework it drags in.
5. **Active development**, as of October 2026.
6. **Coding agents.** Whether an agent can check the API instead of guessing it.

## The ranking at a glance

| # | Framework | Best for | Write plugins in | Closed-source commercial plugin |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Sonore SDK | Best overall | C++17, header-only | Free, Apache-2.0 |
| 2 | JUCE 9 | The largest ecosystem | C++17 | Free to $20,000 revenue a year, then $40 to $175 per user per month; or AGPLv3 |
| 3 | iPlug2 | Permissive licence with AAX and iOS | C++17 | Free, zlib-like |
| 4 | HISE | Sample-based instruments | Its own IDE and scripting, on JUCE | HISE licence, €50 or €300 a month, plus a JUCE licence |
| 5 | DPF | Linux and LV2 | C++11 | Free, ISC |
| 6 | nice-plug | Rust | Rust | Free, ISC |
| 7 | Cabbage 3 | Csound users | Csound 7, with an HTML interface | Allowed; every export carries its GPLv3 framework |
| 8 | Faust | DSP as a language | Faust | Depends on the wrapper it compiles into |
| 9 | RNBO | Max users | Max patches | Needs Cycling '74's commercial terms |

### Formats and platforms

| Framework | CLAP | VST3 | Audio Units | AAX | LV2 | Linux | iOS | Android |

Faust and RNBO generate code for other targets rather than wrapping formats themselves, so they are covered in their own sections.

## 1. Sonore SDK: best overall

The Sonore SDK is a header-only C++17 framework published under Apache-2.0 in October 2026. A plugin is one `plugin.cpp` with a DSP struct, a parameter table and a descriptor. From that one file it builds:

- a `.clap`, a `.vst3`, an AUv2 `.component`, an `.lv2` bundle and a standalone app, from one compile;
- an `.aaxplugin` for Pro Tools, against your own copy of Avid's SDK;
- an AUv3 extension inside an app, for the Mac and for iPhone and iPad;
- an Android app, built with the NDK and no Gradle.

CLAP is the core, and every other format adapts it, so a plugin cannot behave differently depending on which format a host loaded.

Why it ranks first:

- **The only framework that covers every format and platform.** Native CLAP, VST3, AUv2, AUv3, AAX and LV2, on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. Every other entry on this list misses at least one of them.
- **Free at any revenue.** Apache-2.0, with its patent grant: no revenue tier, fee, splash screen or copyleft for closed-source plugins.
- **Built for coding agents.** An official MCP server, an Agent Skill and `llms.txt`, all generated from the headers. CI checks that the server's search finds all 766 public types in its 282 headers, so an agent checks names instead of inventing them.
- **Measured, not promised.** Every commit builds and runs the full test suite on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. Both project templates pass `clap-validator` and `pluginval` at strictness 10 as generated. Every example runs at nine sample rates and at block sizes from 1 to 8192 with zero allocations on the audio thread.
- **A deep DSP library.** Circuit-level models of the Fuzz Face and the TS-808, tape saturation, and BS.1770 loudness and true-peak metering. Pitch correction and phase-vocoder pitch shifting, a granular engine, and plate, spring and FDN reverbs. Synth building blocks with polyphonic modulation and a mod matrix. All of it is implemented from published papers.
- **Small and portable.** The saturator example is a 494 KB `.clap` on Windows, with its native editor and every format's code in one module. Its DSP compiles to WebAssembly unchanged for a browser preview.

**Pick it if** you are starting a plugin in 2026. [Sonore SDK vs JUCE](/blog/sonore-sdk-vs-juce/) compares it with the incumbent in depth.

## 2. JUCE: the largest ecosystem

JUCE is the incumbent: a large, module-based C++ framework with plugin formats, a GUI toolkit, DSP, audio devices and networking. JUCE 9 shipped in July 2026, and 9.0.4 followed in October. It builds VST3, AUv2, AUv3, AAX, LV2 and standalone apps on the desktop, iOS and Android.

Two things keep it from the top. The first is the licence: AGPLv3, or a commercial EULA that is free up to $20,000 in annual revenue and then costs $40 per user per month (Indie, up to $300,000) or $175 (Pro). The second is CLAP, which was promised for JUCE 9 and is not in it: CLAP builds use the third-party clap-juce-extensions.

**Pick it if** you already have a JUCE codebase or team, and the licence fits your revenue.

## 3. iPlug2: a permissive licence with AAX and iOS

iPlug2 is a zlib-like C++17 framework with native CLAP, VST3, AUv2, AUv3, AAX, web and standalone targets, IGraphics on NanoVG or Skia, and a WebView option. It ships a `CLAUDE.md` and nine Claude Code skills. Linux is not a listed platform, LV2 is not built, and there are no versioned releases.

**Pick it if** you want a permissive licence with AAX and iOS and do not need Linux.

## 4. HISE: sample-based instruments

HISE is an open-source IDE and framework built on JUCE, aimed at sample-based instruments, with synthesis and effects as well. It exports VST, AU and AAX plugins and standalone apps for Windows, macOS and Linux, plus iOS apps. It is GPLv3. A closed-source release, free or paid, needs a HISE commercial licence and a JUCE commercial licence. HISE's licence costs €50 a month below €50,000 in annual revenue (Indie) and €300 a month above it (Pro).

**Pick it if** you build sample libraries and want an IDE made for them.

## 5. DPF: Linux and LV2

The DISTRHO Plugin Framework is ISC-licensed C++11 from the Linux audio world: LV2, LADSPA, DSSI, VST2, VST3 and CLAP, plus JACK standalones, with its own DGL toolkit, a WebView or Dear ImGui for interfaces. Audio Unit support has been in progress since 2024, and there is no AAX.

**Pick it if** Linux and LV2 come first for you.

## 6. nice-plug: plugins in Rust

nice-plug is the community fork of nih-plug, which went into maintenance mode in May 2026. It builds VST3, CLAP and standalone apps from Rust under ISC, at version 0.4.2 (September 2026) and still labelled experimental. Neither it nor nih-plug builds Audio Units, AAX or LV2.

**Pick it if** you want to write DSP in Rust and VST3 plus CLAP covers your users.

## 7. Cabbage 3: Csound users

Cabbage 3 (3.0.14-beta, 26 October 2026) writes the instrument in Csound 7 and the interface in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, edited through a VS Code extension. It exports VST3, CLAP and AUv2 plugins on macOS, Windows and Linux. Plugins can be sold, but the GPLv3 framework ships inside every export, and in a standard export end users can read the Csound code. Protected exports go through Cabbage Pro.

**Pick it if** you already write Csound.

## 8. Faust: DSP as a language

Faust is a functional language for signal processing from GRAME-CNCM, developed since 2002. It compiles to C++, C, LLVM bitcode, WebAssembly and Rust, and directly to CLAP plugins with faust2clap. Other formats go through a host framework, for example faust2juce, which wraps the DSP in a JUCE project.

**Pick it if** you want to write the DSP itself in a language designed for it, and are happy to wrap it in another framework.

## 9. RNBO: Max users

RNBO is Cycling '74's add-on for Max. It exports patches as VST and Audio Unit plugins, C++ and JavaScript source, web audio, and targets such as Raspberry Pi and Ableton Move. Its generated code is licensed under Cycling '74's export licence or GPLv3, and commercial use goes through Cycling '74's licensing terms.

**Pick it if** your instruments already live in Max patches.

## Or no framework: CLAP with clap-wrapper

Write a plugin straight against the MIT-licensed CLAP headers, and the MIT [clap-wrapper](https://github.com/free-audio/clap-wrapper) turns it into VST3, AUv2, AUv3, AAX, a standalone app or WebAssembly. You trade a framework's parameters, state, GUI and DSP for owning every line.

## Which one should you pick?

- **Starting a new plugin, or want one framework for everything:** the Sonore SDK.
- **You need iOS and Android, with no licence bill:** the Sonore SDK.
- **A coding agent writes most of the code:** the Sonore SDK.
- **You already ship on JUCE and the licence fits:** JUCE.
- **Sample libraries in a dedicated IDE:** HISE.
- **Linux and LV2 first:** DPF or the Sonore SDK.
- **Rust, Csound, Faust or Max:** nice-plug, Cabbage 3, Faust or RNBO.

## Questions

### What is the best audio plugin framework in 2026?

The Sonore SDK. It is the only framework on this list that builds native CLAP, VST3, AUv2, AUv3, AAX and LV2 plugins and apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android from one C++17 source file. It is free under Apache-2.0 at any revenue, and it has an official MCP server for coding agents. JUCE comes second, for its ecosystem, at a licence cost once revenue passes $20,000 a year.

### What is the best free audio plugin framework?

The Sonore SDK. Under Apache-2.0 it is free for closed-source commercial plugins at any revenue, and it builds every major format. iPlug2 (zlib-like), DPF (ISC) and nice-plug (ISC) are also free for closed-source plugins but build fewer formats. JUCE is free only up to $20,000 a year in revenue or under the AGPLv3, HISE needs a paid licence for any closed-source release, and Cabbage ships its GPLv3 framework inside every export.

### Which framework is best for sample libraries and virtual instruments?

HISE is built around sample-based instruments, but a closed-source release needs both a paid HISE commercial licence and a JUCE commercial licence. The Sonore SDK builds instruments too, with voice stealing, mono and legato with glide, polyphonic modulation, a mod matrix and a sampler example, and costs nothing at any revenue.

### Can I build audio plugins without writing C++?

Yes. nice-plug uses Rust. Cabbage 3 uses Csound 7 with an HTML interface. Faust is a functional DSP language that compiles to C++, WebAssembly and other targets, and to CLAP plugins with faust2clap. RNBO exports Max patches as VST3 and Audio Unit plugins. With the Sonore SDK, a coding agent can write the C++ for you, checking every name against the SDK's MCP server.

### Which audio plugin framework works best with AI coding agents?

The Sonore SDK, the only one with an official MCP server, so an agent can check that a class or function exists before using it. Its Agent Skill and `llms.txt` are generated from its headers. JUCE publishes an `llms.txt` and an `AGENTS.md`, and iPlug2 ships Claude Code skills, but neither has an MCP server.
